STEM CELLS…….
what are they? AND why do we WANT them in our creams????
Stem cells have recently become a huge buzzword in the skincare world. But what does it all mean?
Companies are creating products with specialized peptides and enzymes or plant stem cells which, when applied topically on the surface, help protect the human skin stem cells from damage and deterioration and stimulate the skin's own stem cells. Skincare specialists are not using embryonic stem cells; it is illegal in Australia to incorporate live mammal materials into a skincare product. THANK GOODNESS for that!!!!
Adult stem cells are present within our bodies and serve to maintain and repair the tissues in which they are found. Adult stem cells are found in many organs and tissues, including the skin. In fact, human skin is the largest repository of adult stem cells in the body. With all the latest reports research and development taking place we’ll be viewing all our new sprouting greys or “platinums” as we like to call them; with slightly less distaste.
As it turns out, grey hair could be protecting us from cancer!
The pigment that gives our hair colour is produced by cells called melanocytes and their number is kept topped up by stem cells. Hair starts going grey when the number of stem cells in our hair follicles decline.
But now studies are suggesting the reason stem cells decline is that as they are increasingly exposed to radiation and chemicals that harm DNA (like UVA rays and parabens), they become damaged and turn in to melanocytes. This ultimately leads to fewer melanocytes as there are fewer stem cells capable of topping up the melanocyte pool – and more grey hair. But it’s this process, scientists suggest, that is protecting us as it discourages the proliferation of cells with damaged DNA, which could pass on mutations. So next time you look into the mirror appreciate that those “dreaded” platinums “could” just be your saving grace.

Hair is formed in hair follicles, which are complex mini-organs in the skin, all hair follicles are formed during fetal development, then new hair is generated in the hair follicle by continually undergoing phases of recession, rest, and growth throughout life.
This is where hairdressers and Waxing specialists come in to play …..
The length of the hair is determined by the duration of the growth phase; for example, the growth phase for scalp hair can proceed for a number of years, while the growth phase for eyebrows last a few months. Hence you need to reschedule yourself in A LOT more regularly for your brow wax compared to your hair cut.
After the growth phase, hair formation ceases, and the follicle recedes and enters a period of rest. After a period of rest, a new growth period starts, and the old hair is ejected and lost from the body.
The reason for this complex regulation of hair growth is not understood, but it has been suggested that it makes it possible to adjust hair growth to the season.
Research teams identifies Lhx2 as an important regulator of hair formation. The Lhx2 gene is active during the hair follicle's growth phase and is turned off during the resting period. The scientists have been able to show that Lhx2 is functionally involved in the formation of hair, as hair follicles in which Lhx2 has been inactivated cannot produce hair…. So it would seem that’s why if we wax regularly and for a long enough series of “phases” those follicles eventually inactivate the Lhx2 !!!!!! which is why you always hear of people who have been waxing for years having BARELY ANY HAIR LEFT TO WAX!!!! Makes it WORTH the investment in the long run!!!!
